R.A.F.Scouts in France flying towards the German lines in fighting formation
National Library of Scotland
Reconnaissance aircraft, France, during World War I. This striking image shows five reconnaissance aircraft in a night sky. If the original caption is correct in naming these planes as belonging to the Royal Air Force (RAF) then this photograph must have been taken after April 1918 when the RAF was established. The Royal Air Force was formed by amalgamating the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. R.A.F. Scouts in France flying towards the German lines in fighting formation.'] digital.nls.uk/74548892
